A Grain of Salt

Meta Perspective

· Teddy Aryono

In short, it is looking at something from a higher perspective. It will give you a more holistic, comprehensive point of view. It sometimes also means trying to understand a situation through an external, non-involved standpoint, hence non-biased and neutral.

Let’s say you look at certain topic/situation. Instead of judging based on that single topic/situation, your perspective takes into account other people’s perspective, and also bigger knowledge that you have, to give a more holistic final perspective/judgement.

In a way, it may sound like “think bigger” or “being empathetic”, but meta perspective is a bit different to me. It could be a combination of both, though 🤷‍♂️

How to get better? Whenever you are at certain topic/situation, and you feel hard to give judgement/opinion as objective as possible (without bias and taking side), try to disengage and step back. Take a moment to look around, inspect your surroundings, take time to think and evaluate. Think broader and bigger, correlate ideas/knowledge, take into account others’ situations (being empathetic).
